DRAW DOCS – a poster exhibition inspired by films of the 13th WATCH DOCS

25-11-2013

This year during the International Film Festival WATCH DOCS. Human Rights in Film (Warsaw, December 6-12) there will be a special exhibition held showcasing posters inspired by documentaries from the 13th edition of the festival. The posters are created by artists who through their work created visual reviews of the films screened at WATCH DOCS.

Both reviews and posters respectively have been inseparable features of cinema almost from its very beginning. The former, written with a sublime language of critique have always played a role of a subjective guide to cinema. Pointing towards its positive and negative sides the reviewer had the power to either inspire the viewers to see a film or, conversely, convince people to stay away from certain titles. The story of a film poster is different – firstly, it played a wholly informative role. It was only until later that it became recognised as a medium for unbound artistic expression. Artists who consciously treat the poster as an interpretative tool have set themselves in the same line as critics who are armed with language. Curious as to see what happens when a poster becomes a review at the same time, we asked a group of graphic designers to cooperate with us in creating posters which will be their unique interpretation of documentaries shown at the 13th WATCH DOCS.

Artist taking part in the exhibition: Edgar Bąk, Katarzyna Bogucka, Leszek Cegiełkowski (Bloody Tears Studio), Agata Dębicka (Piksele), Janek Koza, Paweł Kozłowski (Swanski), Magdalena Łapińska, Dariusz Paczkowski (3Fala), Dawid Ryski, Marta Zabłocka,  Łukasz Zbieranowski (Fajne Chłopaki) oraz  Alicja Kobza, Małgorzata Frąckiewicz i Tomek Głowacki (Poważne Studio).

The opening of the exhibition will take place on the 6th of December at 7 pm in Galeria Laboratorium in the Centre for Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski (2 Jazdów Street, Warsaw). The DRAW DOCS exhibition will be open every day, between 6-12 December, during the screening hours of the festival. Documentaries which inspired the posters will be shown at the festival as well as being available online at www.kinoplex.pl.
