Social media and war: what mechanism makes us fall into the trap of doomscrolling again and again, only to compulsively return for more images of death and destruction?

The war in Ukraine is the first conflict unfolding from the outset in parallel on social media. The constant stream of images of death flooding our screens inevitably numbs viewers, but is it even possible not to watch them? This documentary by a young German filmmaker focuses on people who have physically escaped the war but can’t extricate themselves mentally. What psychological mechanism keeps driving us back into the doomscrolling trap? Why do we return for more, even after seeing thousands of similar images? Does this growing desensitization somehow prepare us for the possibility of confronting wartime trauma in real life? By examining how the virtual world seeps into reality, Ewan Wedell reveals how little we actually know, despite appearances to the contrary, about a war that has been shaping our lives for three years.
