In 2020, under mounting political pressure, Index, Hungary’s largest independent news outlet, collapsed. In a historic act of protest, more than eighty journalists resigned together. Among them was András Földes, who decided to document from within an unprecedented struggle for freedom of speech in an increasingly authoritarian state.
80 ANGRY JOURNALISTS is a powerful and uncompromising account of the clash between independent journalism and political pressure. The film exposes mechanisms of intimidation and the systematic weakening of the media, revealing how fragile democracy can become.
At the same time, it is a story about those who refuse to compromise - journalists standing on the front line in the fight for truth. In an era of disinformation and growing political influence, the story of Index is no longer just a local case; it has become a warning for all of Europe.
The screening is organized as part of the event “Illiberalism in East-Central Europe: A Look Into the Futures.”
