"Walls" by Kasia Smutniak will open WATCH DOCS 2023

Walls, Kasia Smutniak's directorial debut, is a moving documentary about the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. The film was born out of the need for a deeper analysis of our powerlessness when faced with suffering. Above all, the film shows the drama of people looking for a better place to live and the tremendous efforts of the activists on the border, who try to help them, often risking their own lives. The film's focal point is the wall put on the Polish-Belarusian border. This division became the reason for the juxtaposition of two perspectives: contemporary and historical, the latter including a personal and family story. The film is also a reflection on the origins of evil and the functioning of walls in the contemporary world - both the tangible ones, such as the wall of the Jewish cemetery in Łódź, and the invisible ones, manifested in resentment towards one another.

Walls premiered at TIFF in September. WATCH DOCS goers will be the first in Poland to watch Walls - and talk to the director.
